Color My World

Have you ever wondered why the colors you see emotionally move you as with a sunset or “speak” to you when choosing colors to decorate your home or add to your wardrobe?  Have you ever gone to the market like I have and find yourself deciding what to buy by the color?  Color is an energy vibration that changes us.  How and why?

Throughout the ages, color and light has impacted our way of life.  Since Aristotle and Pythagoras, color and light medicine continues to be practiced and studied throughout the world.  As you probably know, it was Sir Isaac Newton who declared that white light contained all colors, after he passed sunlight through a prism and observed the light refracted into seven colored rays of light, which he called the spectrum.  The spectrum is what we refer to as the rainbow colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.  Each of these colors is infused with its own specific wavelength and unique healing properties.

Color is a universal, silent and soulful language.  Colors contain information and convey different messages.  Colors communicate.  Society has used colors for social order where red means stop or danger as in “red alert”.   Green means go, yellow caution.  Black can be elegant or express mourning.  Colors may move us emotionally or spiritually like a beautiful sunset or breathtaking landscape.  Colors also have the ability to heal while helping individuals reduce stress, and promote calm relaxation and spiritual connection.

“Mere color, unspoiled by meaning and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways.”  — Oscar Wilde

Color is visible and invisible light that contains electro magnetic energy.  Color and light frequencies transmit specific energy and information, and can have a powerful effect on us on all levels.  The body absorbs color through the eyes and that color is then interpreted in the brain.  The skin, the body’s largest organ, also absorbs color.  One of my clients was surprised that she knew the color of the orange silk scarf I placed on her body before I revealed its color.  She commented that she “felt it” and “sensed it”.

Color light therapy, is a holistic non-invasive vibrational healing modality that uses color combined with a light source as a tool to gently assist the flow of vital energy for the body to function optimally to support the healing process and bring about well-being.

When the body’s energy life force is blocked in a particular area, so is the energy flow to the rest of the body, like a garden hose with a kink in it.  The kink prevents the rest of the garden from receiving the nourishment necessary to thrive.  When we lack sunlight, the body becomes malnourished of pranic (life force) energy as with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  Even Florence Nightingale in the 19th century professed the importance of natural sunlight for healing.

Color is linked to the limbic system and is connected to emotions and the physical response that is associated with those emotions.  When I have asked my clients to describe or share their experience after a sound and color healing session, a few say they “cannot put it into words”.  The way color is processed is unique to each individual and is processed differently in the brain than other visual information.  Some recall memories; experience new pleasant images; see or feel the colors moving inside their body; or sense they were expanding and connecting with the universe.   Most do share they felt deeply relaxed and lighter with no stress, and that they slept well that night.

Western medicine acknowledges the therapeutic uses color therapy.  The all white clothing theme donned by hospital personnel has shifted to colorful uniforms.  Blue-green light therapy, known as phototherapy, is used to treat infants with jaundice instead of administering blood transfusions.

Hospitals have added colorful therapeutic gardens, nature videos and room designs that capture more natural sunlight.  It has been noted that patients have reported less stress and anxiety, and required less pain meditations.  Evidence also shows patients have less anger and fear when connected to the visual calming effect of nature.  The healing vibration of music, sound and art are also playing a role.

We are influenced by the colors that surround us in our environment, the colors we see, wear and eat.  Are you aware of your color world or where you emotionally, physically or spiritually feel color in the body?

Here are 5 simple ways you can use color and light for health and well-being.

  • I recommend eating multi-colored foods like the colors of the rainbow.
  • Be consciously aware of the effect of the colors in your home and at work.
  • In choosing a specific color, ask your heart to guide you in your choices.
  • Experiment wearing different colors and notice how you feel.
  • Pay attention to the amount of sunlight you are receiving on a daily basis.
